Tanzania is providing farmers with subsidies for fertilizers using cash recovered from a corruption scandal at the country’s central bank, the Guardian reported, citing Deputy Agriculture Minister David Mathayo.
The east African country has pledged about 40 billion Tanzanian shillings ($30.9 million) this fiscal year to help farmers pay for fertilizer and other farming inputs, the Dar es Salaam-based newspaper said.
The scam at the Bank of Tanzania was exposed last year after an audit showed $116 million was paid from the central bank to 22 companies using forged or improper documents.
